Launch of IPP marks a key miletone in Oman’s first waste-to-energy project

Email :1

Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) is working closely with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (NPWP) on the Sultanate’s first-of-its-kind Waste-to-Energy project in Oman, which has now entered the Request for Qualification (RFQ) phase. This milestone not only marks a major step in Oman’s sustainable waste management journey but also supports the national circular economy strategy.

Transforming Waste Into Clean Energy

The WTE Independent Power Project (IPP) will be developed in Wilayat Barka, South Al Batinah. Using advanced grate incineration technology, the facility will treat up to 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) daily. Once commissioned in Q2 2031, it will generate between 95 and 100 megawatts of electricity. Furthermore, it will reduce nearly 302,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually and supply around 760 GWh of renewable energy to the national grid.

Tariq Al-Amri, CEO of be’ah, explained:
“The Waste-to-Energy project in Oman is more than just infrastructure. Instead, it’s a transformative step in how we manage waste, reduce emissions, and contribute to the circular economy and energy transition goals.”

be’ah’s Strategic Role

As Oman’s custodian of waste management, be’ah has laid the strategic and technical foundation for this pioneering project. In fact, its contribution includes:

  • Comprehensive waste characterization studies.
  • Long-term waste supply forecasts.
  • Critical technical inputs that strengthened the project’s bankability.

Moreover, be’ah will serve as the exclusive feedstock supplier for the facility’s 35-year operational life. This ensures a consistent supply of waste diverted from engineered landfills and transfer stations, while also maintaining both quality and volume. In addition, be’ah will hold an equity stake, which reinforces its long-term commitment to the project’s success.

Alignment With Oman Vision 2040

The Waste-to-Energy project in Oman directly supports Oman Vision 2040. By reducing landfill dependency, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and creating green jobs, the initiative highlights energy recovery as a pillar of integrated waste management. Furthermore, it complements be’ah’s ongoing programs in recycling, hazardous waste treatment, and material recovery.

Tariq Al-Amri added:
“The integration of waste and energy sectors is a breakthrough in innovation and policy alignment. Consequently, it reflects collaboration between Oman Investment Authority (OIA), Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), NPWP, be’ah, and future private partners.”

Be’ah and NPWP encourage qualified and experienced entities to participate in this transformative Waste-to-Energy project in Oman. Interested parties can access details and RFQ submission guidelines through NPWP’s official channels.
